The surface layer of the ocean refers to the topmost part of the sea, which is in direct contact with the atmosphere. It includes the epipelagic zone, which extends from the water's surface down to a depth of about 200 meters (656 feet). This layer is characterized by varying levels of sunlight penetration and high levels of marine life activity due to abundant nutrients available from the upper layers of the ocean. The surface layer is also where most human activities related to sea travel, fishing, and recreational water sports take place.
